I’m Kurt TeWinkel, founder of TurfOps Weekly.
I’ve spent much of my career on the equipment and operational side of the turf industry, working closely with the people responsible for keeping golf and sports turf operations moving when downtime, delays, and inefficiency carry real consequences.
Over the years, that work took me across North America into maintenance shops, distributor facilities, golf courses, training environments, and conversations with superintendents, technicians, equipment managers, operators, and industry professionals trying to solve practical problems in real-world conditions.
That experience shaped how I see the industry.
I tend to pay attention to the operational side of turf management. The systems behind the scenes. The friction points that slow crews down. The workflow decisions that quietly determine whether an operation feels stable or constantly reactive. The small process improvements that save real time and reduce unnecessary strain for the people doing the work every day.
That’s also why I believe the future of turf operations is not simply about adopting more technology.
It’s about understanding which tools genuinely improve operational reality.
The best technology reduces friction, supports people, improves predictability, and fits into the way real facilities actually function. Not just how they look on paper.
Most of what interests me lives at the intersection of equipment, workflow, infrastructure, labor realities, and decision-making. What works consistently in the field. What creates hidden workload. What sounds good in theory but struggles in practice. And how autonomy, robotics, electrification, and changing operational expectations are beginning to reshape the work itself.
Outside the turf industry, I’ve always gravitated toward hands-on work and problem-solving. I’ve worked as an electrician, remodeled my home, and generally enjoy figuring things out when conditions change or plans stop going smoothly. That mindset carries into how I approach turf operations as well.
I also enjoy golf, mostly for the time outside and the people around it, not because I’ve mastered the game.
TurfOps Weekly grew out of these experiences and observations. It exists to better understand how modern turf operations actually function, where the industry is heading, and what those changes mean for the people responsible for making it all work.
Not from a distance, but through ongoing observation, conversation, and experience close to the work itself.
